In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

DIVERGENT is a very addicting read.  I finished it the day I bought it. However, it felt like it was lacking quite a few things. ..
I really liked this book. It was a great &  fast read. I was checking out at the store, and the cover just latched onto my attention. Everyone says don't judge a book by it's cover, but really, who doesn't? IT CRIES OUT FOR ATTENTION! It's absolutely fantastic. Now, let's get to the actual content of the book. It started out strong, and it left you guessing. Which was great for the situation the heroine was in. The author did an excellent job of properly introducing the characters. Everything that needed to be explained, was explained. And then came choosing time. I understand Roth not wanting to give everything away, but when Beatrice did choose her faction, there was no twist/surprise. I was just like ' okay, she chose that one'. There wasn't enough reasoning or foreshadowing behind it. That is one of the problems I had with this book.

The very opening of the story was fantastic, but after she chose her faction, everything just HAPPENED. It should have been more spread out . This book would have been ABSOLUTELY AMAZING  if the book was a lot longer. Yes, there are people who fall in love really quickly, but it was really unbelievable. I'm not saying there weren't parts that were cute, because there was. I'm just saying that it would have been more enjoyable if they took their time,or had not gotten together in this book at all. It's called a trilogy for a reason. SPREAD IT OUT. There were things that were meant to be a mystery, but were really obvious. For example: her mother. I feel like her mother wasn't explored enough, and the ending didn't give much room for it . Overall I liked Beatrice's character development, but her's along with others, weren't really amazing. I really liked the supporting characters, and they didn't have much air time. Also, when there were action scenes, they were very confusing. Yes, I understand what the author was trying to do, but the way it was worded was very confusing.  What i did love about this book was Beatrice's relationship with her friends. I absolutely loved that.
Anyways, if you're looking for a quick, entertaining read, you should read divergent. This is Roth's debut novel, and she's still very young. She's a talented writer,. I can only guess her writing will grow in quality & that she'll be very successful.

P.S. I've been awake all night, and it's 8 am. I'm going to bed. Sorry if I rambled. I'm tired. I probably made zero sense, and lacked proper grammar. I also apologize for sounding so negative. Divergent is a really great book, and more people should read it. Hey, It can't be terrible if the movie rights have already been picked up!
Also, first review! woohoo!

  1. Hi, Sierra! Congratulations on your first review! I can tell you really thought about what you wanted to say. I've been wanting to read Divergent and have seen lots (and lots!) of really positive reviews; it's refreshing to see one that gives a different take on the book. Too-quick love drives me nuts, too.
